The name of the shell is a Cowrie. We take the shell through nine steps from raw shell to the finished product. The letters and objects are the top layer of the shell and the rest we take away, all the purple, white and brown colors are the natural colors underneath the top layer. It is all the natural shell, it isn't stickers or paint as some people think. It took us 2 years to figure out our process on how to do this art and after we figured it out, we went through over 200 shells just to get the first one right. There is about a half dozen different ways to do this artform.
